30 Rock: Season 4 Episode 8: Secret Santa

dannyjennasingLiz starts her Christmas gift list for TGS stars and staff. Liz realizes since Jack is her friend she should buy him a gift too. Liz asks Jack what he wants for Christmas, explaining this is the method her family uses so that way everyone gets what they want. Jack tells Liz she should be able to discover what he likes by knowing him. Jack creates a social networking profile on YouFace and gets “finger tagged” from his high school crush, Nancy Donavan. Liz tells Jack her high school crush was Larry Wilcox of the cop show CHiPs. Jack sets up a meeting with Nancy, who is visiting New York with her two teen-age sons. The thought of seeing Nancy again cheers Jack up for the holidays.

Pete is tired of Jenna always begging out on charity giving from the TGS staff. Pete hears the new cast member Danny singing like an angel on the set and plans to have Danny sing the Christmas solo instead of Jenna. When Danny realizes Pete is trying to upset Jenna by giving him the solo he suggests they do a duet instead. Pete smiles and agrees, knowing Jenna hates to share the spotlight with anyone.

Cerie, Liz’s personal assistant, helps Jack understand his new YouFace profile. Cerie tells Jack that Nancy’s YouFace profile shows her relationship status with her husband has changed from “working on it” to “weirdsies.” Jenna plots to keep Danny from singing the duet with her. Danny finally confronts Jenna who admits the Christmas solo means a lot to her: the only happy time for her during Christmas was singing carols at the mall while her mom shoplifted.

The writers find out Kenneth is coming by for his annual Secret Santa gift exchange. The writers hate the extreme rules and lame gifts in Kenneth’s gift exchange and resort to creating a fake religion called “Verducianism” that prohibits them from participating in the event, with their religion requiring Kenneth to do things for them like order pizzas. Kenneth decides he should help the writers celebrate their strange religion. When Tracy tells Kenneth the writers made up the religion to get out of his Secret Santa gift exchange, Kenneth starts to have doubts about his own faith. Kenneth believes the only way his God is real is if Pete, Lutz, and Toofer are punished for lying to him. Pete, Lutz, and Toofer are arrested in a case of mistaken identity, restoring Kenneth’s faith in God.

Danny feels sorry for Jenna and decides he will sing off key to make Jenna happy about her part of their Christmas duet. Jenna is startled then thrilled that Danny is allowing her to stay in the spotlight. Pete realizes what Danny is doing and storms off the set, his plans ruined.

Jack’s assistant Jonathan is jealous that Liz is exchanging gifts with Jack. Jonathan tells Liz Jack’s Christmas gifts are extravagant and he can never match the level of gifts he gives. Jack and Liz agree that their gifts to each other must cost nothing. Jack laments to Liz that he enjoyed his time so much with Nancy he is homesick for Boston and wishes she could stay longer. Liz leaves to find the perfect gift for Jack.

Nancy surprises Jack at his office, he discovers her train has been cancelled. Jack and Nancy spend a romantic evening together, making Jack’s wish come true. Liz is thrilled with Jack’s Christmas gift, an original ticket from the high school play she starred in, “The Crucible”, framed with wood from the high school stage. Jack tells Liz he and Nancy spent time together. Liz tells Jack Nancy’s train was delayed by a bomb threat and hopes he liked his Christmas gift. As Liz and Jack leave the building, Jack’s real Christmas gift to Liz, Larry Wilcox from CHiPs, sits on his motorcycle waiting for her. As Liz beams, Jack wishes Liz a Merry Christmas.
