Community Season 1 Episode 8: Debate 109

jeffdebatesongBritta is trying to quit smoking and everyone around her wishes she’d start up again. Pierce tells a bad joke and Britta loses it. Britta is acting crazed and taking it out on the study group. Pierce, a jack of all trades, tells Britta she should try hypnotherapy to stop smoking and he just happens to be a hypnotherapist. Britta agrees to try a few hypnotherapy sessions with Pierce because she feels sorry for him.

Troy shows the group Abed’s student films at Greendale’s A/V department’s website. Abed’s latest film features how he sees the lives of his friends in the study group. Shirley thinks Abed is psychic because he seems to know exactly what she will say and do next.

Annie asks Jeff to be her partner on the debate team so she can beat her nemesis Simmons, City College’s star debater, who uses the fact he is in a wheelchair to his advantage. Dean Pelton bribes Jeff with a free parking space if he will participate in the debates and Jeff goes for it. Annie tells Jeff they must study for the debate but Jeff doesn’t feel he needs the practice. Jeff thinks debating is just like his lawyer days so no sweat, but Annie thinks he’s mistaken and must study under her tutelage.

Britta’s sessions with Pierce are located in the music room. Britta feels sorry for Pierce, going along with the therapy couch senario, and fakes being hypnotized. As Britta loses her cool with Pierce he get frazzled, trips and falls into the middle of a drum set and instruments in the room (shades of Chevy Chase on SNL). Next time we see Pierce he has a leg brace on from his fall.

The study group meets and they decide to confront Abed about his use of their lives in his film. Abed tells the group he is a good judge of character and can put them in any situation and predict how they will act. Troy and Shirley begin to think Abed can predict their future.

Annie begins the Greendale debate with her topic “people are inherently evil” while City College must prove “people are inherently good”. Jeff takes his turn at the debate and free forms it, ending with a sing-a-long of ELO’s “Evil Woman” that engages the crowd. The judges give Greendale low scores. The gym is reserved for another event so the debate must be put on hold. Jeff and Annie run into her archrival Simmons who taunts them and insults Annie. Jeff tells Simmons he’s mincemeat and rushes off to study debate techiques with Annie.

Shirley notices that Troy and Britta are acting exactly like a scene she’s already seen in one of Abed’s films and it freaks her out. Shirley finds out Abed thinks Jeff and Annie are going to kiss in the future. Shirley warns Jeff and Annie about Abed’s prediction and they suddenly feel awkward around each other.

Pierce conducts another hypnotherapy session with Britta and gives her a gross out suggestion when she wants to smoke; he also manages to hit on her in another hypnosis suggestion and Britta loses it. Pierce is so flustered by Britta’s anger that he falls into the music instruments again on his way out of the room.

As the second session of the Greendale/City College debate begins, Jeff takes control and masters the art of debate. The debate rages on with Greendale winning when Simmons decides to go off script, ejects himself out of his motorized wheelchair and Jeff catches him as he falls, with Simmons stating “people are inherently good”. As Jeff holds Simmons, Annie grabs Jeff’s face and lays a kiss on him and Jeff swiftly drops Simmons on the floor, proving, according to Annie, that “people are inherently evil”.

The Greendale team wins the debate and everyone celebrates. Britta realizes she is grossed out when she wants to smoke and expresses her gratitude to Pierce. Jeff and Annie congratulate each other, feel uncomfortable because of their kiss, and quickly decide to part ways.
